2026 Zika Virus Spray Schedule

The City of Florence Public Works Department will begin mosquito control operations in an effort to reduce mosquito populations and help prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses such as Zika and West Nile virus. Beginning mid-April and continuing through mid-September 2026, Public Works will conduct mosquito control by spraying and distributing mosquito larvicide “biscuits” to eliminate mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes throughout the city.

The chemical used for spraying is Kontrol 4-4, which has a very low odor and minimal staining potential. The product is dispersed at a rate of 5.5 ounces per minute from a truck traveling between 5–7 miles per hour. Under typical conditions, including a 5-mph wind, the spray may drift across an area of approximately 300 feet. If necessary, the application rate may be increased up to 8 ounces per minute, which is the maximum allowed under current regulations. This mosquito control program has proven reliable in previous years. Because mosquitoes have an average life span of approximately 7 days, they do not develop immunity to the spray.

Residents can also help reduce mosquito populations and minimize mosquito bites by following these simple steps:

1.      Use insect repellent containing DEET to protect yourself and your family.

2.      Limit outdoor activity during evening and early morning hours, when mosquitoes are most active.

3.      Use yellow or “bug” outdoor lighting instead of bright white lights to reduce mosquito attraction.

4.      Eliminate standing water around your property, including water in tires, buckets, puddles, birdbaths, and unused swimming pools.

Public Works will conduct spraying once per week or as needed throughout the season.

The 2026 spraying schedule will be as follows:

April 24th

May 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th

June 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th

July 3rd, 10th, 17th , 24th, and 31st

August 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th

September 4th, 11th, and 18th

The City of Florence appreciates the cooperation of all residents in helping protect our community from mosquito-borne illnesses.
